As a community advocate and a facilitator, I always thought I was a good listener, and perhaps my listening skills were not bad. But, since becoming a coach in 2012, I’ve been honing my listening skills and sharpening them to an entirely new level. Today, it has skyrocketed my ability to build relationships with anyone, my emotional intelligence, my ability to work across any lines of difference, and my ability to work through conflicts.
Sharpening my listening skills has changed every aspect of my leadership and personal relationships.
Think about all the times in your life when communication has broken down. Did you feel misunderstood by your peers, your bosses, your partners, your intimate loved ones? Have you shut down or closed off communication because you weren’t ready to listen to their side of the story? Did you listen superficially, only to build your own case? Did you lose friendships, partnerships, and opportunities because you were too prideful to listen?
Deep listening is freedom.
When we create the space to really listen to others, we free ourselves from needing to be right all the time. We free ourselves from disconnection. We free ourselves from needing to know all the answers. We open ourselves to learning. We are able to connect with others in a way that is safe for everyone.
If you are a leader, a movement builder, a negotiator, if you are a teacher, a facilitator, a mediator, a healer — if you are in the business of working with people — and you would like to deepen your listening skills, we at CoachDiversity Institute welcome you to enroll in our coach certification programs.
